Tuesday night’s historic 133-44 victory over McNeese State was the result of No. 7 LSU’s overwhelming effort, which also broke school records for game scoring and winning margin. With 27 points and 10 rebounds, Aalyah Del Rosario led the club in scoring, and Angel Reese finished with 21 points and 10 boards. The Tigers’ 89-point winning margin was also higher than the 76-point triumph against Prairie View in 1995.
The Tigers were given a nine-day respite following a victory against No. 9 Virginia Tech in the middle of finals week. After a one-week break, LSU defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 83-53 on Sunday. In a post-game presser, Kim Mulkey talked about the emerging talent, Aalyah Del Rosario, and the influence of Angel Reese over her.
Aalyah Del Rosario on the cleansing process by Angel Reese
LSU’s coach, Kim Mulkey, is known for her impressive recruitment skills. Recently, the team received another commitment from Aalyah Del Rosario, a 5-star center who is set to graduate in 2023. Del Rosario joins Mikayla Williams, the top player in her class, as the second Top 10 recruit to commit to the Tigers. Her high school teammate, Angelica Velez, also committed to LSU earlier this fall.
As Aalyah was a sure surprise, the freshman exhibited a terrific exhibition of ability in the second quarter of LSU against McNeese. Kim Mulkey applauded her efforts to transform her body. When a reporter asked why Angel was defending her, she said, “The beating she takes from Angel Reese.” Allyah became more mobile and confident as she transformed her physique.
Del Rosario is a skilled player who may not be the fastest on the court but makes up for it with her coordination and agility. She has excellent fundamentals, as demonstrated by her ability to catch and run in traffic and score without losing possession of the ball. With her talent, she is sure to be an asset to the team.
During the opening six minutes of the game, LSU was deadlocked at ten points after missing ten of its first thirteen shots. Nevertheless, Morrow’s three-pointer, which started LSU’s run, allowed them to flip the tide. The Tigers had a 32–12 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 62–12 lead at halftime.
Del Rosario, a 6’6″ rookie center, who often plays off the bench, is anticipated to be a key member of the Tigers going forward. Del Rosario is currently starting in place of Sa’Myah Smith, a sophomore who was averaging 11.7 points and 7.6 rebounds. She suffered a season-ending injury in the team’s seventh game on November 24.
